BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY CONSULTATIONS
At the initial consultation for breast augmentation surgery, a pertinent medical and family history will be taken, with particular emphasis on breast issues. Dr. Vogt and his nursing staff will then meet with you and explain the surgical procedure in a personalized fashion.
All efforts will be made to answer all of the questions you may have regarding breast augmentation surgery. It is always encouraged to bring a friend or a significant other with you to be present during the discussion in the question and answer phase. After this, your surgeon will perform a focused physical examination addressing important issues such as the size and symmetry of your breasts and chest wall.
There are numerous ways of trying to determine a woman's objective in breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Vogt encourages patients to bring photographs of a woman's breast that they find desirable. Also, the patient will work with the nursing staff utilizing breast sizers to determine the desired breast size. Dr. Vogt has found this to be very effective in determining the ultimate size in thousands of breast augmentation procedures.
A detailed discussion is held with the patient at the time of the initial office consultation as to medications that need to be avoided, time required from work if undergoing breast augmentation surgery, and level of activity following the surgical procedure. The patient will also meet with the surgical and scheduling director who will outline costs of the operative procedure which will be all-inclusive of the implants, the operating room, anesthesia, and the surgical fee.
THE BREAST IMPLANT
Silicone and Saline implants are now available for breast augmentation. The type and shape of implant varies from one person to another. Dr. Vogt has been using Silicone implants for many years and has been involved in a research study for patient safety using Silicone implants when they were not available to first-time breast augmentation patients. Wayzata Plastic Surgery currently has many different sizes available for our patients. We prefer to use a round implant, either a low profile, moderate profile, or a high-profile implant. The style of implant depends on multiple factors that will be determined at the time of the consultation and physical examination.
INCISIONS AND IMPLANT PLACEMENT IN BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
Dr. Vogt prefers to use the inframammary (under the breast, in the crease) incision for placement of the implants in breast augmentation surgery. This incision allows an excellent access to the sub muscular level and does not harm the woman's breast. Dr. Vogt places the implant behind the pectoralis muscle as there are numerous advantages to this technique. The goals are a more natural-appearing breast with a better transition to the upper chest of the breast mound, the percentage of scarring around the implant is significantly lower, and the risk of visible ripples or folds in the implant envelope is diminished because of the greater amount of the patient's own tissue overlying the implant. Also, it is easier for the patient to carry out self-examinations of the breast with greater reliability, and, mammography is significantly more reliable as well.
THE DAY OF BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
The breast augmentation surgical procedure requires approximately three hours of pre-operative planning, operating time and recovery. During the pre-operative phase the patient will meet with your surgeon to ensure all questions are answered before proceeding. The patient will also have the opportunity to resize with implants and confirm her selection. The board-certified medical doctor anesthesiologist at Wayzata Plastic Surgery provides general anesthesia with the greatest degree of comfort and safety. After the breast augmentation surgery, the patient is transferred to the recovery room in the care of a registered nurse who has advanced cardiac life-support (ACLS) training.
THE POSTOPERATIVE PERIOD FOLLOWING BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
A responsible adult must be available to transport the patient following surgery and also be available for the first 24 hours to assist the patient in getting up to the bathroom, taking medications, and eating and drinking. A detailed set of instructions will accompany the patient home and the nursing staff will review all of these instructions carefully. A nurse from PSC will call the patient the evening of the surgery to check her status and answer questions. If any questions or concerns arrive outside of our normal business hours, our answering service will be able to contact your surgeon for you. You will return to the office for a recheck appointment 5-7 days after your procedure date and/or as your surgeon recommends.
